Planning & Urban Design

Whether revitalizing downtown districts, re-inventing suburbia or developing a transit-oriented development, our planning group creates sustainable and economically viable settings in which people live, work and shop. For more than four decades, our work has established logical frameworks, fostered heightened cooperation between public and private interests, and sparked a sense of civic pride.

Featured Projects
Addison Circle
Located 20 miles northwest of downtown Dallas, Addison was long characterized by insensitive, sprawling development. Through a program of community outreach and public-private coordination, designers created a master plan for a phased mixed-use development on a 124-acre site. The result is an award-winning community that provides a model for a sustainable alternative to suburban sprawl.
Edinburgh Harbour
The Hub at Leith Docks in Edinburgh will link Edinburgh to its waterfront. Building on the momentum of Ocean Terminal and other existing developments within the area, the master plan leverages Leith’s historical traditions and Edinburgh's strong economic and educational platforms to create a residential, retail and commercial development plan for the future.
City of Brea Master Plan
The City of Brea’s master plan for an ambitious mixed-use project in Southern California creates a strong and memorable identity and market flexibility. This award-winning project dedicated 25 acres for redevelopment in the heart of Brea’s downtown. The neo-traditional master plan recalls the ambiance of a classic Main Street with around-the-clock vitality.
LA Live
As part of a large-scale effort to revitalize downtown Los Angeles, RTKL created a comprehensive master plan for a 33-acre sports and entertainment district anchored by the Staples Center. At the center of the district, a 3.8 million-SF mixed-use development with exciting, 24-7 commercial offerings will help the city secure its reputation as one of the world’s most dynamic hubs of entertainment.
Guangzhou Railway Station
This transit-oriented, mixed-use master plan provides a new urban core for Guangzhou, a city integral to the continued economic development of China. In addition to creating a sustainable, live/work/play environment, the plan contributes to future sensitive development of the area by accommodating national and local needs, contributing to the economy, and creating a robust urban framework.
Mahmood Faruqi, Director
“Our international perspective is our clients’ advantage. We’ve worked in cities on six continents, sat in their traffic, grappled with their transportation systems and enjoyed their cultures. Every city and every project, wherever it is in the world, increases our understanding of what improves the quality of people’s lives. Whether it’s San Francisco or Dubai, factors like well-lighted streets, accessible bus stops and navigable shopping centers are integral to comfortable, inviting places.”
