Transit

More and more, transit is becoming a crucial aspect of urban and suburban development, creating opportunities for sustainable, walk-able environments. Our international team of planners and architects understands that transit is only as strong as the connections it makes to its users and surrounding development.

Featured Projects
Principe Pio Station
In a bustling downtown Madrid, the $130 million Principe Pio retail centre offers an exciting new way of thinking about the convergence of urban transit and retail. The project’s demanding program was to maintain all existing train, bus and subway lines at full operational capabilities while creating a landmark 110,000-SF destination-based retail centre within a densely compact urban setting.
Baltimore Washington International Airport
The A and B terminals at BWI Airport provide an inviting and visually engaging retail and dining environment for travelers waiting for their flights. RTKL’s package of regionally sensitive graphics and materials, high-end and varied restaurant and shopping options, and a comprehensive set of tenant criteria makes the airport a destination in and of itself.
Salamanca Train Station
With an existing urban railway station at its core, a new commercial development in Spain introduces a cinema, restaurants and shopping to local residents and travelers. By “placemaking” at the scale of the city using local materials and integrating a public plaza, designers helped owners to meet the goal of a commercially viable destination with a strong civic presence.
Mockingbird Station
In Dallas, where Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) ridership totals more than 97 million trips per year, transit-oriented development is providing a model for other cities. One such successful flagship development is Mockingbird Station, a 10-acre urban-style village that mixes residential, office and retail with a pedestrian-friendly framework.
Downtown Silver Spring
On Washington, DC’s Metro line in Silver Spring, Maryland, a master plan engaged surrounding development and created a vibrant city center. With a focus on creating pedestrian connections to the rail stop, the master plan creates an active streetscape and a vibrant mix of retail, entertainment, restaurants, office, hotel, residential and civic uses.
